Sony Ericsson: 14-16 phones this year, Walkman brand isn’t dead

In an interview with Mobile Today, Sony Ericsson’s Nathan Vautier, Head of Sales in the UK, said that the company will announce 14-16 phones this year, including “a number of Walkman phones” for the lower-/mid-end segment. Most will be priced around the £100 mark.

Interesting. The last announcement of a product in the Walkman range was back in March with the low-end W205 and prior to that it was the W995 at the Mobile World Congress in February. There has been talk about the Walkman brand being dead, but that apparently isn’t the case. I must however say that I don’t like the idea of low-/midrange Walkman products. The Walkman brand is supposed to be a symbol of quality, and just how much would you expect from a £100 phone? Personally: Not a whole lot.

Other than that, the interview brings up the quality issues with the Aino and Satio, financial situation and of course Sony Ericsson’s strategy of supporting multiple operating systems. You can read it for yourself at the link below.

It’s always good to hear about the parent companies being supportive with the joint venture. Good to hear that walkman phones are not dead BUT personally I’d rather have the communications and entertainment brands, just put the superb camera and music quality on the same phone. Aino had pretty much great audio quality, photo was good enough for me, but not superb. BTW, a little off topic Mizz, how’s the audio quality of Vivaz?
