The Japanese network AU KDDI has just announced its so-called Winter collection of handsets and there’s a bit of something for everyone. The line-up included two Sony Ericsson handsets – one for the “older crowd” and AU KDDI’s first Bravia-branded handset for the high-end segment.

The phone for the “elderly” crowd is called Urbano Barone and has been designed specifically for this segment, i.e. keys with a high contrast colour scheme. When it comes to features this phone is quite unusual considering it’s for older folks. It sports a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, a large 3-inch WVGA-resolution screen, GPS, WiFi and supports microSD cards up to 16 gigs. Seniors of Japan, I envy you!

The Bravia-branded phone, dubbed the U1 (funny, eh?), is not the first handset to make it to the mobile scene in Japan. NTT DoCoMo have had Bravia handsets earlier on, but this is a first for AU KDDI. Like the Urbano Barone, the U1 features a 3-inch WVGA-resolution screen, but this one uses Sony’s Bravia technology. It is even capable of enjoying Blu-ray movies on this baby using Sony’s Blu-ray forwarding technology to hook it up with a third party Blu-ray player. Other than that we’ve got the usual set of ‘standard’ features for a phone in the land of technology. This includes a 5-megapixel auto focus camera, Bluetooth, GPS, mobile TV (1Seg TV) and WiFi. Oh, and it’s waterproof. Nice!

There’s actually also a third phone announced today – the S002. You can read more about this phone here!
